O’Reilly for Higher Education provides access to business and technology resources with more than 47,000 books, over 30,000 hours of video, plus case studies and expert playlists from 200+ business and technology publishers. O’Reilly is continuously updated, with new material added every day.

O’Reilly also includes courses to help learners develop skills and be prepared for careers in tech and business.

O'Reilly Certification Prep supports you to prepare for exams with content that has often been created by the official certification vendor. Support materials include self-paced books, instructor-led videos, and interactive practice tests.

Certification guides are now available including AWS, Cisco, CISSP, CompTIA, Google Cloud, Linux Foundation, Microsoft and Oracle.

Access O'Reilly through NSCC Libraries' link. Login with your NSCC w number and password, the same one you use for NSCC email.

 

O'Reilly eBooks, eAudiobooks, Videos and Courses can also be located within the library catalog, Novanet. When viewing items in the catalog, under View Online, O'Reilly content will have a link to the platform.

Searching O'Reilly

Search for eBooks & eAudioBooks on the O'Reilly homepage.

1. Conduct a keyword search or under Explore Skills, select a skill or View All.

2. Filter your results lists by Formats = Books to see books on this topic. Select Formats = Audiobooks to see this format only. 


 

3. Limit by Topic, Publisher, Language, Rating, Publication date. The default sort is by relevance.

4. Browse titles that are Recommended for you, Recently Added and Most popular.

Search for Videos on the O'Reilly homepage.

Search for Courses on the O'Reilly homepage.

O’Reilly offers over 5,000 live and on-demand courses in tech and business topics including cloud computing, software architecture, infrastructure and ops, programming languages, AI and ML, security, critical thinking, and more.

  1. Click on Start Learning and select Courses under the Start Learning tab.
  2. From the Courses page, browse Courses by the roles and skills
  3. Identify roles to personalize the course list to your learning needs
  4. Identify skills to further personalize the course list.
  5. You can also toggle back to choose a different role.
  6. Save and view your personalized course list.

O'Reilly Expert Playlists are lists curated by industry experts to help you explore essential content related to a topic. Playlists can feature books, videos, audio books and courses.
  • Access Expert Playlist in the Featured menu located at the top right. 
  • Follow an Expert Playlist by clicking on the Follow button. 
  • Share an Expert Playlist by sharing the URL

Viewing O'Reilly

View Resource Details On the Book Information Page

  • Time to Complete - an estimate of how much time it will take to finish a book.
  • Click Start or Continue to get to the Book Reader Page.
  • Table of Contents. Click X to close. Click a section header to go directly to that section.
  • Explore the You Might Also Like feature for additional recommendations.


 

On the Book Reader Page you can:

  • Use the Table of Contents to select a chapter or section. 
  • Use the Magnifying Glass icon to search inside the resource.
  • Use the Viewer Settings to change font size, color mode and reader width.

View Resource Details On the Video Player Page

  • Click Start to go to the Video Player Page to watch the video.
  • Table of Contents. When you finish a clip, you will be auto-advanced to the next clip. A progress bar / checkmark will indicate when a clip or section is completed.


 

On the Video Player Page you will find:

  • The Progress Bar at the bottom of the screen.
  • The Video Player Controls. 
    • video navigation
    • quality and speed 
    • full screen view
    • enable Captions
  • The Table of Contents and Playlist options.
  • The video transcript if available.Click on the Transcript icon to show or hide transcripts. Select your language preference from the drop down menu.
  • The Viewer Settings including the option to to on/off Transcript Autoscroll.

Browse Courses

Using the search filters on the left, you can: 

  • Indicate ability level (beginner, intermediate and advanced)
  • Edit your preferences - select different roles or skills to focus your search
  • Reset your search
     

View Resource Details On the Course Landing Page

Once you have selected a course, click on the course title to enter the course. Course details including instructor, learning outcomes and duration can be found on the course landing page. You can also add a course to your personalized playlist.

Click on Begin to start the course.

 

Video Player Page

When you select a specific course, several tools are provided, including:

  • Progress bar
  • Video player controls
  • Table of Contents, Reader Settings and Playlist options (to the right)
  • Video transcript is available for most videos.

Sharing Content

Share links to O'Reilly resources in emails or in Brightspace (2-step process).

Additional Features

Create and Manage O'Reilly Playlists

Create a Playlist by clicking + Add to Playlist or the Playlist icon next to any item.

Add item to an existing Playlist or create a new Playlist.

Go to Your O'Reilly Profile > Playlists to see all your Playlists.

Manage Playlists, click on ellipsis (three dots) to:

Create and Manage O'Reilly Highlights and Notes

On the Book Reader Page, you can highlight important sections of content and add personalized notes.

Highlights and notes will be saved under your O'Reilly Profile > Highlights.

All Highlights and Notes appear under your Highlights.

Export your highlights and notes to a spreadsheet, which includes book titles, chapter titles, date of highlight and links.
