Study Skills: Study Groups and Group Work

Benefits of Study Groups

Forming a study group within courses is an effective learning tool. Working together with peers can help establish healthy learning and study habits as well as help with memory and information retention. Study groups are helpful because "when [we] practice and teach others course material, it is easier to remember the information and recall it later on." (UBC, 2022)

Forming study groups is an effective way to work with fellow students and to learn new concepts and information. Working together is a great way to share resources, ideas, understanding, and expertise.

More details about study groups:

  • Anyone can form a study group
  • Study groups can be online or on-site
  • Study groups can meet as frequently as necessary (e.g. once each week, once each month, every 2 weeks, etc.).  Find a time that works best for your needs as a group
  • Study groups can focus on material review, concept clarification and discussion, practice tasks, test preparation, and for questions and answers
  • Each study group should have a focus, have a timeframe, and include practice (e.g. tasks, discussions, sample exercises, etc.)
