APA Style (Seventh edition): Artifical Intelligence (AI)

This guide will assist students in learning APA style and applying it when writing and formatting papers and other course assignments.

Artifical Intelligence (AI)

The APA Style team is developing official guidelines on how to cite, quote, and use AI tools such as ChatGPT. More information can be located at the APA Style Blog.

Always confirm with your instructor whether AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools like ChatGPT are allowed for an assignment or activity.

Unauthorized use of AI maybe considered an academic integrity offence.

If you use AI to generate ideas, outlines, or other content for an assignment, always include a statement in your work identifying which AI tools you used and how you used them. Include the prompt or question you used, and any part of the AI-generated text that you used in your assignment.

Always verify information and sources generated by AI tools.

  • AI has been known to create false/incorrect information
  • AI has been known to cite non-existent sources
  • AI uses intellectual property without proper citation or attribution
  • Content from AI tools is often not retrievable by other readers
