EAL Supports and Resources: Speaking Skills

About Speaking Skills

Like writing, speaking is considered a productive skill.  When we speak and write, we are producing language so that we can express ourselves, share information, respond to a situation, or ask for support.

One of the best ways to increase your speaking skills is to practice.  Here are some things you can do to help your speaking skills:

  • Form conversation groups with your classmates to practice your communication skills
  • Form study groups to work on and talk about your courses and assignments
  • Try to use English as much as possible to give you many opportunities to practice English in different places (e.g. in class, at the grocery store, in a coffee shop, at the bank, etc.)
  • Volunteer in the community to give you more opportunities to use English

There are also some resources that can help you with your speaking and pronunciation skills.  Take a look at the resources below.
