EAL Supports and Resources: English Proficiency Tests

Language Learning Strategies

The best way to increase language skills is to use the target language and to practice as much as possible.  Practice all skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Seek out opportunities to practice each skill to improve your proficiency and comfort in that skill.

It is common to be stronger and more comfortable in some skills and less confident in other skills.  For example, some find it easier to read and write than to listen and speak and vice versa.  It is also common to take language tests and to have different scores in each of the four language skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).

Use resources in this guide to help you continue to strengthen your English language skills.

NSCC also has a Writing Guide and Writing Centre available to all NSCC students who are working on program assignments.  Additionally, there are English as an Additional Language (EAL) webinars and pre-recorded EAL webinars available to NSCC students to help with language practice and development.

English Proficiency Tests

English language proficiency tests are sometimes required for admission to post-secondary institutions (e.g. universities and colleges), for specific jobs, and for immigration-related applications.

Depending on the institution, company, or governing body, the test required could be different.  Make sure you check to ensure you take the required proficiency test.  Here is a list of the most common English language proficiency tests:
