Tips and tricks for searching and reading eBooks at NSCC

How do I get to an eBook?

Once you find your eBook in the Novanet Catalogue, click on the Available Online link beneath the title.

Depending on which collection the Book is from, the next steps will be different. See the instructions for each main collection.

Using eBooks from home

For most of our eBook collections, when you are accessing from home, you'll be prompted  by this screen to login using your W number and password.

 

Accessing eBooks

In the Novanet Catalogue, ProQuest eBooks will have a link that says ProQuest eBooks.

Click on this  to get to the ProQuest platform.

How can you view a ProQuest eBook?

  • Read Online - Read the eBook, view the Table of Contents, use the Search Within feature, Download page range* etc.
  • Download the Book or Chapter - See Reading Offline tab for instructions

Information about how many pages of the book you can copy (copy & paste) or print is listed here under Availability.


 

ProQuest eBooks - Formats

ProQuest eBooks default format is EPUB and can be read using the Online Reader. If the eBook is available as a PDF, you can switch between formats using the Book Details icon:

ProQuest eBooks - Linking

From the eBook Detail Page, you can select Share Link to Book, copy the link, and include it in an email or Brightspace course.

  • If you are in the Online Reader, you can select the URL in the address bar to link to any page or chapter of the book.
  • If you are in a PDF of the eBook, use the permalink icon to link to specific pages or chapters.

In the Novanet Catalogue, EBSCO eBooks will have a link that says EBSCOhost Academic eBook Collection.

Click on this to get to the EBSCO platform.

You'll be brought to the book! From here you can choose read the book online by clicking on it's title or download the eBook to read in Adobe Digital Editions.

Download eBook and read in Adobe Digital Editions

You will need a free MyEBSCOhost account to download eBooks from this collection.

Select Full Download

  • The Download eBook (Borrow) window will open.
  • Choose your format EPUB or PDF
  • Check the box next to: I have Adobe Digital Editions or equivalent installed.
  • Click Full Download
  • The book will download and open in Adobe Digital Editions (ADE).

If it does not open in ADE, go to your Downloads and double click the file.

 

Downloading DRM-free ebook

Some EBSCO eBooks offered by NSCC do not have DRM (Digital Rights Management) restrictions. With these DRM-free eBooks you do not need to sign into MyEBSCO  or use special software such as the Adobe Digital Editions to download and read them. Find information about downloading DRM-Free eBooks on EBSCO's help site.

In the Novanet Catalogue, Gale titles, will say Gale eBooks.
Click on this link to get to the Gale platform.

Reading a Gale eBook

No other steps are needed to access the book. From here you can view the books Table of Contents, Index, or Search withing publication (keyword search the whole book!)

In the Novanet Cataloglue, Overdrive eBooks will say Overdrive eBooks.

Click on this link to get to Overdrive.

Your Overdrive account is automatically attached to your NSCC account.

When you get to the Overdrive platform, you can select Borrow or Sign in and you will be prompted to login to your Office 365 Account.

Once you are logged in, you can access the eBook.

Borrow: Read now or Download eBook

Select Borrow under the title to borrow a book. From here you can choose read the book online by clicking on Read now in browser or Download the eBook to read in Adobe Digital Editions. For Audiobooks, you can listen in the browser or download them in the Libby app (see below). 

Download EPUB ebook

  • The Device Compatibility Notice will appear, confirming that Adobe Digital Editions in required for this format on your current device.
  • Click Allow to proceed with download. 
  • Once the download is complete, click on the file to open in Adobe Digital Editions.

Setting up Libby App

  • On the welcome page, select Yes you have a library card.
  • Look up the library by using the Search for a Library option. 
  • Search for Nova Scotia Community College in the search box (using NSCC as a search term will not turn up results).
  • Select Sign In With My Card.
  • The Libby app will ask to sign you in via a secure website. Select Next and then Continue.
  • If you are on-campus, you should be signed in automatically. 
  • If you are off-campus, you will be redirected to NSCC to login with your W# and password. 

Add your NSCC account to an existing Libby account

  • Navigate to the main menu and select Add Library.

  • Search for Nova Scotia Community College in the search box (using NSCC as a search term will not turn up results).
  • On the main menu, select Manage Cards.
  • Select Add a Card
  • The Libby app will ask to sign you in via a secure website. Select Next and then Continue.
  • If you are on-campus, you should be signed in automatically. 
  • If you are off-campus, you will be redirected to NSCC to login with your W# and password. 

Sharing titles in the Libby App

Currently the sharing icon in the Libby app does not work for academic libraries. In order to share titles, you can use the following work around: 

  • Use the Share Icon to copy the title link. The example below if for an iOS device. The share icon appears as three dots on an Android device. 
  • Manually add #library-nscc to the end of the link. 
  • This will show NSCC availability for the title at the bottom of the page.
  • Note: This is only an issue in the Libby app. The Share feature works fine when using a browser.
