Academic Integrity: Artificial Intelligence (AI)

This guide has been created to provide you with quick access to resources on the topic of Academic Integrity.

Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence)

College policy on the use of Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence):

  • Instructors should provide written clarification about the acceptable use of GenAI tools to support the completion of course requirements (e.g., assignments, projects).
  • If there is no written clarification in your course workplan or Brightspace course about the acceptable use of GenAI, you should assume that it is NOT permitted. Use of GenAI, when permission has not been given, may be found to be in violation of the Academic Integrity Policy with consequences as outlined in the Policy.
  • If you're in doubt about whether or not a GenAI tool can be used for a particular assignment, you should always ask your instructor.
  • You must acknowledge the use of GenAI outputs and properly cite the source following the citation style as directed by your Instructor, e.g., APA citation style. The NSCC Libraries' APA Style Guide is a great place to start or check with your Campus Library for help.

If you're permitted to use GenAI to generate ideas, outlines, or other content for an assignment, always include a statement in your work identifying which AI tools you used and how you used them. Include the prompt or question you used, and any part of the AI-generated text that you used in your assignment.

Always verify information and sources generated by AI tools.

  • AI has been known to create false/incorrect information
  • AI has been known to cite non-existent sources
  • AI uses intellectual property without proper citation or attribution
  • Content from AI tools is often not retrievable by other readers
